The Best of Both Worlds

Little Sashimi didn’t know if he should be happy or sad. He was going on his first day of preschool. He was excited to learn new things and make new friends. But, he was sad about one thing: he had to leave his best friend, his dog Sushi behind. Ever since Sushi jumped into their car, Sashimi and Sushi have been inseparable.

“Honk, honk!” The bus was here.

“Have a good day at school,” said Sashimi’s mom.  Sashimi hoped he would.“Hello Class, my name is Mrs. McDonald. I am going to be your teacher this year. In preschool you don’t have to do much. Most of the time is nap time. You better like sleeping because you will get a lot of it. You will also get some playing time. We do fun art projects, you will prep for kindergarten. Now you have to go to your desk and try to get to know your partner. Let’s move!”

Sashimi sat on his seat where he saw a scrawny, happy-looking kid with jet black hair next to him.

“Hi, my name is Tony,” he said. “Hi,” Sashimi said back, with a smile. Could he have made his first friend?  As they talked, Sashimi found out that Tony wanted to be a teacher.

“Chat time over, stay at your seats!” said Mrs. McDonald. “Everyone take out your math books!”

Time passed, but really slowly.  By now, Sashimi really started missing Sushi. When would school be over?!

“Ding!!!!!!!!!!!” the bell rang suddenly, and everybody jumped.  The kids ran out, school was finally over.

“Where are you, Mommy?” Sashimi said to himself, looking around. Then Tony walked up to him.

“Hey Sashimi, do you want to play on the jungle gym?” asked Tony.

“Sure,” said Sashimi. The boys ran to the jungle gym and started playing.

It was so much fun! Sashimi realized now that he can make friends other than Sushi. A few more kids joined them on the jungle gym. They asked if they could play with them. So they all started playing tag on the jungle gym until the supervisor called Sashimi’s name. It was time to go home.

Sashimi remembered how this morning he was so sad to go to school, but now that he had made new friends, he couldn’t wait to go back tomorrow. As he walked into his house, Sushi barked loudly and jumped straight into Sashimi’s arms. This was the best of both worlds.
