LANGUAGETOPIA

The word language comes from the Latin word “lingua” which means “tongue”. I wish there were hats that could automatically teach you a language but, alas, they still need to be invented. Some ancient languages like Egyptian were written using pictures, also called hieroglyphics. There are some languages that are only spoken but not written, and then there are some languages that are extinct – which means no one speaks them anymore.

Here are some basic phrases/sentences in some of the languages mentioned in “Bob the Biologist and the Magic Hat”. Try to memorize them and impress your friends, uncles and aunts!

Spanish

Hello   Hola

How are you?     ¿Cómo estás?

What is your name?      ¿Cómo se llama? (Llama is pronounced yama)

Thank you.     Gracias

 

French

Hello   Bonjour.

How are you?   Comment Allez-Vous (pronounced comotaale vu).

What is your name?     Quel est votre nom? (pronounced Quale votr Num).

Thank you    Merci.

Hindi

Hello    Namaste

How are you?  Aap kaise hai?

What is your name? Aap ka naam kya hai?
